The Campaign to Protect Rural England exists to promote the beauty, tranquillity and diversity of rural England and has listed the top ten qualities that must be present in order for a place to be considered ‘tranquil’.
In order of importance, they are:
Seeing natural landscapes
Hearing birdsong
‘Hearing’ peace and quiet
Seeing natural woodland
Seeing the stars at night
Seeing streams
Seeing the sea
Hearing natural sounds such as leaves rustling, wind blowing
Hearing wildlife noises such as sheep bleating, cows mooing and stags bellowing (not all exactly wild maybe but definitely rural)
Hearing the sound of natural water such as rivers babbling and waves crashing
